Wadi rum is calling you

about us

Salameh Al-Zalabieh

My name is Salameh Al-Zalabieh and I am a professional guide in Wadi Rum.
I was born and raised in the desert. My family lived like nomads in Wadi Rum. My parents moved to the village because life was easier there and my siblings and I could go to school. The desert has no secrets for me, I know it like the back of my hand. I used to play around the sand dune and lead the goats through the desert.

At age ten I entered the working world as a camel guide, taking tourists on camel rides from Lawrence’s spring to the village. I was loaned a camel to work and with the money I saved I bought my own camel, so that I could offer camel rides further into the desert.

Camels allowed the Bedouin to travel from place to place, carrying heavy loads. They are very hardy animals made for the desert, only needing to drink once every 10 days and their padded feet are made to walk in the sand. When you ride on a camel you can’t hear them walking, they are very silent.

Then at about age 15 I started work as a cook at a friend’s camp, preparing dinner and breakfast. Those 5 years of cooking made me the wonderful cook I am today. (I do get praised a lot for my cooking.)

At 20 years old I started working at the family camp, doing jeep tours in an old Toyota Land Cruiser. Being the entrepreneur that I am I eventually decided to branch out and work for myself.

I learnt to speak English well by practising with tourists and travellers at every opportunity. I love to share my Bedouin stories with guests, about the traditions and legends of Wadi Rum.

All this experience has got me where I am today and has given me an appreciation of what guests expect from me as a guide and showing you the best of what Wadi Rum has to offer.
Every step that got me to where I am now brought me knowledge. Knowledge on what people are expecting from me as a guide and show them the beautiful places of Wadi Rum.

I personally bring all of our guests from the village to the camp. At the camp I organize everything from meals, preparing the tents and planning the tour itself. If it is a busy period I have a team who assists me with the tours. I am very lucky to work with my cousin Sabah, and my brother Aied. The three of us have worked together for a while and we make a great team. Sometimes my uncle, Salem, who was a police officer in a previous life also works with us. He is a wise man with a lot of knowledge about the Bedouin culture and Wadi Rum.
